K9 Unit Critical Care Training
The Officer Down Memorial Page logged 24 reported Line of Duty deaths of police K9s in 2017. When we discovered that our local units receive little to no training in providing immediate, in-the-field, critical care for their K9 partners, we were shocked. As an emergency veterinary medical team we have worked closely and supported our regional K9s in many different ways, but after learning this, we created our K9 Critical Care Program to address these issues. Part of our K9CC program is to provide training courses for handlers on addressing emergency medical response for their K9 partners during their operations, whether training, on duty, or in the field.
The EARS K9CC program provides handlers with multimedia and hands-on instruction in immediate K9 critical care by providing practical skills combined with exercises based on real world scenarios.
Focus includes:
· Injury Assessment
· Obtaining & Monitoring Vitals
· Traumatic Injury Response
· Securing & Transporting Injured K9s
· Communication With Emergency Veterinary Centers
· In-The-Field Traumatic Care
· Prehospital K9 Life Support
And Much More
The EARS K9CC Course is offered to departments at absolutely no cost to them or to the handlers attending. Depending on the number of personnel involved in the course the timing ranges from a few hours to a full-day program. It provides numerous hands-on exercises that allow handlers to get experience dealing with situations based on “real world” incidents. Certifications in K9 Critical Care are provided for the completion of this course.
