Many people are well aware of the services we provide to companion animals, but what some may not know is that our EARS Team also provides the same emergency medical response for Operational K9s from regional police, fire, Search & Rescue, and other organizations. Last weekend we were honored to put together a special "K9 Awareness Event" that took place at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport. We were joined by K9s from Fairfield, Clinton, Easton, and Meriden, and they were on hand to not only answer questions about the jobs they do in the community, but of course give an opportunity for people to meet the dogs (and their handlers) up close.
K9 Units do so much more than just patrolling the streets, tracking criminals, or detecting drugs and explosives... those very same senses that make them so valuable to departments also helps them locate missing kids, find lost hikers in the woods, identify potential hazards on scene, and much more. Did you know that there are K9s that can even detect accelerants and other chemicals that could be used at the scenes of fires? These amazing dogs do a lot - but they also need a lot, and that's where our special EARS K9 Critical Care Unit comes in. Our medical response team, including our Rescue 2 Animal Ambulance, are available to these units 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to assist them with any operations or injuries in the field. We can deploy to set up triage tents, operational support, relief, and other aspects when K9 Units are involved in incidents or issues which may require being out in the field for several hours. We are always ready to "protect the paws that protect us!."
